Intellum Custom Courseware
Experience has taught us that one of the biggest pitfalls training departments face when translating
traditional stand-up training to web-based modules is a lack of understanding of the end product.
Typically they come to Intellum with a general idea of what they think the course should look like,
but they rarely have enough knowledge of the authoring process or technologies to successfully
articulate their vision. We concentrate heavily on engaging our clients during each phase of the
project, so we can draw that vision out without them having to be eLearning experts from day one.
Understanding the process
The first aspect of any courseware project is choosing the level of functionality required to
effectively deliver your message. For the sake of simplicity, we like to explain these levels
as silver, gold, and platinum.
Silver level courseware is composed of professional audio and graphics along with limited interactivity.
This type of course is effective for getting critical messages out to the field on a tight budget. This
approach is also particularly well suited for students who have little experience on computers or when
internet connection speeds may be an issue.
Gold level courseware includes professional audio and graphics along with more extensive interactivity.
This level of functionality works well for intermediate concepts where a more interactive approach can help
ensure the students' retention of the underlying principles within the course material.
Platinum level courseware has professional audio and graphics, robust interactivity, and advanced features
such as simulations or 3D renderings. This level works very well when delivering software tutorials or sales
training to the workforce.
Courseware Project Timeline
Phase I - Project Kickoff - The first Phase is started by gathering requirements and creating a report of goals and objectives for the course along with a course outline.
Phase II - Storyboarding - In the next phase, instructional designers and graphic designers work together to create a storyboard from the requirements. There are two versions of the storyboard during this phase. The first is the Micro Design, which is a Word document that displays the screens in the proposed order. Includes Client's original copy; descriptions of proposed interactions; and placeholders for quiz items. The second is the Script, which is a Word document that displays onscreen and audio copy; scripted animations and interactions; graphics and/or descriptions of graphics; and scripted quiz items. When the Script receives final approval from the Client, it becomes the foundation for courseware development.
Phase III - Development - In Phase III, you begin to see your ideas come to life. Intellum programmers work from the storyboard to create the animations, interactions, and other course elements dictated by the requirements. After the elements are created, they are assembled into the first comprehensive version of the course.
Phase IV - Quality Assurance and Client Review - Intellum performs an internal review of the course and resolves any issues noted. The Client then performs its review and Intellum resolves any issues noted. By the end of Phase IV, the course will receive final approval from the Client.
Phase V - LMS Setup - During Phase V, Intellum works with the Client's LMS vendor to ensure successful launching and tracking of the course. At the completion of Phase V, the Client is ready to begin training!
