Mailchimp integration for learner email

Marketers email learners by segment. Intellum keeps one Mailchimp audience in sync with your users and turns Intellum groups into tags. An Intellum admin authorizes Mailchimp and picks the audience.

How it connects
Native via Mailchimp OAuth
Who sets it up
Intellum admin, self-serve
What moves
One-way by default: users and groups out

Common uses of the Mailchimp integration

  • Customer education leads send targeted campaigns to learner segments built from Intellum groups.
  • Admins keep the audience clean as name changes, email changes and deleted users update Mailchimp.
  • Marketers see Mailchimp unsubscribes in Intellum through the optional subscription sync.

How the Mailchimp integration works

An admin authorizes Mailchimp in Settings › Apps and selects one audience. A retroactive sync loads existing users and creates a tag for each Intellum group.

After that, background jobs keep the audience current. New users, name and email changes and deleted users update members, and group changes update tags. An email change unsubscribes the old address and subscribes the new one. Deleted users are unsubscribed and kept in the audience.

How to set up the Mailchimp integration

An Intellum admin authorizes Mailchimp, selects the audience and runs the retroactive sync. If subscription status matters, the admin also sets up the subscription sync in Mailchimp.

  • A Mailchimp account with API access, Standard plan or higher recommended
  • An existing Mailchimp audience

How the Intellum and Mailchimp integration handles access and data

  • Authorization: Mailchimp OAuth, granted by an Intellum admin.
  • Data going out: learner email addresses and names move to Mailchimp, and group memberships become tags.
  • Data coming in: with subscription sync on, Mailchimp sends subscribe and unsubscribe events back and Intellum records them in a custom user field.
  • New users: a subscribe event for an unknown email creates a new Intellum user. Review this before turning the sync on for sites with controlled membership.

What to know about the Mailchimp integration

  • Each site connects to one Mailchimp audience.
  • Users must be in the audience before tags apply.
  • Without the subscription sync, Mailchimp unsubscribes do not show in Intellum.

Questions about the Mailchimp integration

Does Intellum integrate with Mailchimp?

Yes. Intellum syncs your users to one Mailchimp audience and applies Intellum groups as tags, so marketers send campaigns to learner segments. Name changes, email changes and deleted users update the audience on their own.

The retroactive sync creates a tag for each Intellum group. After that, creating, renaming or deleting a group and changing its members update the tags. Users need to be in the audience before tags apply.

Only with the optional subscription webhook you set up in Mailchimp. A subscribe sets a custom user field to 1, and an unsubscribe or cleaned address sets it to 0. Without it, unsubscribes stay in Mailchimp.

No. Each Intellum site syncs to one Mailchimp audience. Intellum groups become tags inside that audience, so campaigns still reach specific learner segments.
