Intellumvs. Skilljar Customer Education Platform Comparison for 2026

Intellum and Skilljar both run customer and partner academies at enterprise scale. They differ on who else the platform is built to train, how learning data reaches your warehouse, how their AI agents and MCP connectors are built, and which capabilities are sold as add-ons.

Intellum

Intellum runs customer, partner, and employee education on one platform and data foundation. Creator Agent, Manager Agent, and Learner Agent are all available. Anything you can do in the platform, you can do through the agents. Intellum's Data Connector refreshes learning data every hour for analysis alongside private business data. Each audience runs as its own organization, with its own branded subdomain, permissions, and access, backed by an annual SOC 2 Type II audit.

Skilljar

Skilljar, owned by Gainsight since April 2025, is positioned primarily for customer and partner education, and its Enterprise tier names employees. Pricing is an annual Essentials, Professional, or Enterprise subscription plus an active-user fee. Its MCP Server and AI Tutor are in beta, and its Data Connector is an add-on starting at $25,000.

The Most Important Difference

Skilljar is positioned primarily for customer and partner education, and its Enterprise tier names employees. Intellum is built to run external and internal education on one platform.

Gainsight's own Skilljar FAQ says internal LMS platforms "are built for employee training," while Skilljar "is purpose-built for external education." Skilljar's pricing page names employees in one place, the Enterprise tier description: "For teams scaling to thousands of learners across customers, partners, or employees." Skilljar also publishes a customer case study describing two portals, one for customers and one for internal employees.

Intellum runs customer, partner, and employee programs on the same platform, with separate content, permissions, branding, and authentication for each audience and one data foundation underneath. A majority of enterprise customers run more than one audience on Intellum.

If the program is, and will stay, customer and partner education only, that difference narrows. If employee enablement, partner certification, and customer academies need to share content and data, it is the first question to settle.

02

Who Owns Skilljar?

Gainsight owns Skilljar. Gainsight announced the acquisition on April 2, 2025, and describes Skilljar as an LMS provider for external training.

Skilljar now appears on gainsight.com under the heading "External LMS for customer education," and its product documentation lives on Gainsight's support site. For buyers already running Gainsight CS, that is a practical point in Skilljar's favor. For buyers who do not, it is worth asking how the Skilljar roadmap relates to the wider Gainsight product line.

03

How Much Does Skilljar Cost?

Skilljar does not publish base prices. Its pricing page describes two parts: "An annual subscription plan - Essentials, Professional or Enterprise" and "An active user fee based on the number of active users taking lessons in your Academy in one year."

In Skilljar's words, Essentials is "Ideal for starting your customer or partner Academy," Professional is "Perfect for education teams training multiple audiences or selling courses," and Enterprise is "For teams scaling to thousands of learners across customers, partners, or employees."

Skilljar counts active users as learners who register for and consume content, and says cost per user falls as volume rises. The tier also sets how many Academy sites with custom themes you get (1, 2, or 3) and how many premium integrations (3, 5, or 7).

Skilljar's pricing page lists four add-ons. The Data Connector starts at $25,000, Language Packs start at $10,000 for five languages, and LearnExperts, an AI course-authoring add-on, has no published price.

Content Syndication is included in Professional and Enterprise, per the pricing page and Skilljar's Help Center. The Help Center directs Essentials customers to their Account Executive or CSM, and the pricing page lists Content Syndication at $10,000 in its add-ons section.

Intellum quotes each program to its requirements rather than publishing a rate card. The fair comparison is total cost of ownership, with both vendors quoting the same program: the same audiences, active learners, integrations, data access, AI requirements, and number of branded sites.

04

AI and MCP

Intellum runs three agents, Creator, Manager, and Learner, and MCP connectors for learners, creators, admins and Evolve authors. The Learner, Creator and Manager connectors wrap the same Manager and Learner APIs that power Intellum's own interface. Skilljar's most advanced AI features, the AI Tutor and the MCP Server, are in beta.

Buyers weighing MCP should compare what each server can read and change, who it is built for, and whether it covers the platform's actions or a defined set of tasks. Skilljar's MCP creates and updates courses and lessons. Intellum's connectors call the same APIs that power its own interface, so they cover the actions learners, creators and admins take in Intellum.

Intellum

Creator Agent helps learning teams turn source material into structured courses. Manager Agent lets administrators handle assignments, workflow automation, and reporting in natural language. Learner Agent gives each learner a contextual AI tutor. Anything you can do in the platform, you can do through the agents.

Over the last two years, Intellum rebuilt the platform so every user-facing API is available to agents. A spreadsheet becomes enrolled users, and source files become a course draft, in one prompt.

Intellum's MCP connectors let people take the same actions from Claude, Gemini or Copilot, governed by their role-based permissions.

Skilljar

Skilljar's AI features include generated learning objectives, course descriptions, quizzes, AI Tutor, rating summaries, and MCP. AI Tutor is in beta, and Gainsight's June 2026 release notes add SCORM packages and PDFs as source content alongside HTML, video lessons with transcripts, and audio. LearnExperts is a separate AI-authoring add-on. Skilljar's beta MCP can also create and update courses and lessons through supported AI assistants.

The MCP Server is still in beta. Skilljar's August 6, 2026 release notes add OAuth connections for it and name Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and the Gemini CLI among supported platforms. The Claude setup guide lists read and write actions for student and user management and for course content management.

05

Learning Data

Both vendors can put learning data in front of your BI team. Skilljar sells that as an add-on.

Skilljar's Data Connector is "a customer-specific PostgreSQL database hosted on Amazon Web Services," replicated in near-real time, with "over 35 tables of student information." It starts at $25,000 on Skilljar's pricing page. Without it, Skilljar provides dashboard analytics with CSV export and Strategic Insights, which benchmarks your training data against other Skilljar customers.

Intellum's Data Connector refreshes learning data objects in the customer's own warehouse every hour. Education data then sits next to the metric the business already owns: product adoption, retention, expansion, or partner performance. Intellum also supports APIs, and Pub/Sub events deliver changes within seconds.

Ask both vendors the same questions: which objects are exposed, at what latency, through which mechanism, and at what price.

Where Intellum Is the Stronger Fit

Intellum is the stronger fit when several of these apply together.

  • Employees, partners, and customers on one platform. One content library, one data model, and separate experiences for each audience, with no second system for internal training.
  • Learning data measured against business outcomes. Data Connector output refreshes in your own warehouse every hour, next to revenue, retention, and adoption data.
  • AI agents and MCP connectors across the whole team. Creator Agent, Manager Agent, and Learner Agent are all available.
  • Deep proprietary content. Evolve provides visual authoring, more than 50 interactive components, branching, localization, and Cloud Sync with the platform, so course updates reach learners without re-uploading packages.
  • Enterprise security and governance. An annual SOC 2 Type II audit, a third-party HIPAA attestation, and EU-U.S., UK, and Swiss-U.S. Data Privacy Framework certification. Each audience runs as its own organization, with its own branded subdomain, permissions, and access. SSO options include SAML 2.0, OAuth, OpenID Connect, LDAP, and Azure AD B2C. Data is encrypted with AES-256 at rest and 256-bit TLS in transit, hosted on AWS in the US or in Ireland, under a 99.9% monthly uptime SLA.

Google Retail Training reaches employees of retailers in more than 30 countries on Intellum.

Where Skilljar Is the Stronger Fit

Skilljar deserves close evaluation in four situations.

  • You run Gainsight. Skilljar is a Gainsight product and connects natively to Gainsight CS, Salesforce, Zendesk, and Marketo.
  • You want some add-on prices before the first call. Skilljar publishes starting prices for the Data Connector and Language Packs. Content Syndication is included in Professional and Enterprise, and the pricing page lists it at $10,000 in its add-ons section.
  • You want peer benchmarks in the product. Strategic Insights compares your academy's data with other Skilljar customers. Professional and Enterprise add filters by company size and maturity.
  • The program is external-first. Skilljar is purpose-built and marketed primarily for customer and partner academies, and its published case studies include a program with separate portals for customers and internal employees. Every plan includes an Implementation Manager.

Moving From Skilljar to Intellum

A move from Skilljar starts with an inventory of what the academy runs today, scoped by Intellum's implementation and migration teams.

That inventory covers courses and SCORM or AICC packages, learner records and completion history, certifications, SSO configuration, Salesforce or Gainsight integrations, and any reporting built on Skilljar's Data Connector. The teams scope it against the actual environment and decide what moves directly, what is rebuilt, and what is archived.

The impact.com team moved its academy to Intellum when its previous LMS could not grow with the program, after a 10-person committee ran an RFP. The academy has since served more than 12,000 learners, including 1,000 employees. "Intellum's migration team took us through the process step by step, and we launched to a big spike in learner numbers and engagement," said Samantha Parsons, then Director of the Partnerships Experience Academy at impact.com and now Senior Director, Ecosystem Enablement and Services.
