Slack integration for learner notifications

Learners get Intellum notifications as Slack direct messages and check their learning plan with /intellum. Intellum turns it on for your site, a Slack admin connects the workspace and each learner connects.

Common uses of the Slack integration

  • Learners get enrollment, event and mentor notifications in Slack without logging into Intellum.
  • Learners type /intellum or /intellum plan to see their enrollments privately in Slack.

How the Slack integration works

Intellum turns on Slack notifications for your site. An admin connects the Slack workspace, which installs the bot and slash command but sends nothing on its own. Each learner then connects their own Slack account from their user settings and receives a welcome message.

From then on, new in-app notifications arrive as Slack direct messages as they happen. The /intellum slash command returns the learner’s enrollments privately.

How to set up the Slack integration

Intellum turns the integration on for your site. A Slack workspace admin connects the workspace, and each learner connects individually, so plan a rollout announcement.

  • Slack workspace admin access
  • Learners belong to the connected workspace
  • The Plan feature enabled, for the slash command to return results
Security and IT

How the Intellum and Slack integration handles access and data

  • Authentication: Slack OAuth at two levels, the workspace (admin) and each learner’s identity.
  • Data that moves: notification title, body, image and link, plus the learner’s enrollment list and account name, which identify the learner.
  • Protections: tokens are encrypted at rest, Slack requests are signature-verified and stale timestamps are rejected to prevent replay.
  • OAuth flow: includes protection against cross-site request forgery.
  • Disconnecting: disconnecting at the account level disconnects every learner.

What to know about the Slack integration

  • The slash command returns results only when the Plan feature is enabled, so check your site’s configuration first.
  • Nothing reaches Slack until each learner connects their own account.

Questions about the Slack integration

Does Intellum integrate with Slack?

Yes. Learners who connect Slack get Intellum notifications, such as enrollment, event and mentor alerts, as direct messages, and check their enrollments with /intellum.

Yes. A Slack workspace admin connects the workspace, which installs the bot and slash command but sends nothing on its own. Each learner then connects from their user settings and receives a welcome message.

The learner’s enrollments, shown privately to them in Slack. Learners type /intellum or /intellum plan, and results appear only when the Plan feature is enabled on your site.

Through Slack OAuth at two levels, the workspace and each learner. Intellum encrypts tokens at rest, verifies the signature on Slack requests, rejects stale timestamps to block replay and protects the OAuth flow against cross-site request forgery.
